Most people are taught in school to call it “The War Between the States” (February 1861 to May 1865). I have always been told in my family that it was not a civil war, since a civil war is a war within a state, between people residing in that state. The War Between the States comprised individual states declaring for Northern or Southern causes and loyalties. During this time, there was a higher degree of loyalty to one’s state, much more than to the new United States.
